What is the USB PD charging protocol ?

Oct 29, 2020

USB PD (power delivery) charging protocol is a power transmission protocol published by usb-if organization. It can increase the type-C interface with the default maximum power of 5V / 2A to 100W. and can freely change the direction of power transmission. At the same time, Google announced that mobile phones above Android 7.0 must support PD fast charging protocol

USB PD has now been updated to the USBPD3.0 version. Driven by Google, USB PD has incorporated Qualcomm's QC fast charging protocol. It is expected to unify the situation that different companies use their own charging protocols in the near future. The purpose is to standardize and unify the fast charging market

Between USB PD and Type C

Some people are often confused about the relationship between USB PD and Type-C, and think that Type-C chargers are PD chargers. In fact, USB PD and Type-C are two different things, USB PD is a fast charging protocol, and Type-C is a new interface. The Type-C interface supports up to 5V/3A by default. Only after the USB PD protocol is implemented can the output power be maximized to 100W

Advantages of USB PD fast charging protocol

The USB PD fast charging protocol can increase the power transmission through the USB cable and connector, expand the power supply capacity of the USB cable bus, so as to achieve the purpose of increasing the charging voltage or current, and can freely change the power transmission direction

Relationship with other charging protocols

The USB PD protocol is not the same relationship with other manufacturers' fast charging protocols, but a contained relationship. In the PPS (Quick Charge Technical Specification) released by USB-IF, the USB PD 3.0 protocol already includes Qualcomm QC 3.0 and 4.0, Huawei's SCP and FCP, MTK's PE3.0 and PE2.0, and OPPO's VOOC

QuickCharge3.0/2.0 is a purely fast charging protocol, focusing only on charging and only one-way power transmission. The protocol is to communicate through D+, D- protocol chips for handshake matching, and then increase and change V+ (output voltage) to increase the charging power and make the charging faster

USB-PowerDelivery (USB PD) is not only a protocol for power transmission and management, in fact, it can change the role of the port, communicate with the active cable through the unique CC pin of the type C port, and switch the power supply or the power receiving device. It realizes many advanced functions such as reverse charging of mobile phone to another mobile phone

The future of USB PD

From the data of major mobile phone manufacturers and chip manufacturers, USB PD fast charging has become the preferred charging solution for electronic devices such as mobile phones, game consoles, and notebook computers. In the next 10 years, USB Type-C will also Will become the only interface for power and data transmission between electronic devices, and the unification of the USB PD fast charging protocol is coming soon
